The Big Mac Aggressive Growth Fund
By Andy Fletcher
A man at McDonald’s today had his Number One Meal, and on the side he had himself an additional Big Mac. The man was too old to be trying out for middle-linebacker and did not seem to be rebounding from the throws of starvation. He looked like he had not seen a salad in a little while.
I figured maybe he was working on a “Big Mac Aggressive Growth Fund.” Perhaps he is caught up in the press of T. Rowe Price and Fidelity who tell us that it is important to save for retirement in all areas. Maybe the current recession will last longer than we think. Food prices could sky rocket and his $3 burger today could end up costing $5 tomorrow. Maybe he has just put $75.00 worth of gas into the car and figured it was best that he hedge a little bit on “food-energy” as well by putting an extra Big Mac into “fat storage.”
As a ten-year old, I was taught to put fifteen-percent of my paper route money into my First Northern Bank savings account in case there was ever a rainy day. “Don’t go blowing the sixty dollars that you have saved, Andy, just because Walkmans have hit the market and you want to hear Van Halen ’1984′ while riding your Mongoose to school.” Who knows, maybe our generation has taken this frugality to the area of food. Do skinny people have it all wrong? Is a Big Mac eaten a Big Mac earned?

Andy Fletcher’s career as an artist started early. He began drawing trains-one of his first loves-from his own photos when he was still in school. In 1992, Burlington Northern Railroad asked him to design their popular SD70MAC Executive color scheme. Altogether, Andy has drawn over a thousand trains, from steam to modern diesel and cars, cabooses and other equipment. He has been commissioned to paint trains for many of the railroad historical societies and museums.
