A webcam is attached to a computer to take images and videos and send them in real-time to another computer over the internet. It is connected to the computer through the USB or PS/2 port, or over a wireless connection such as Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Most models can also take images and videos even when offline.

Types of webcam

1. The Wired model – This model connects to the computer port using a peripheral cable. It usually comes with a clip at the base that secures it to a table or a stand for stability. It has a relatively low frame rate and is relatively cheaper to the other models.

2. The wireless model – This model connects to a computer through Bluetooth or a WiFi connection. It provides greater flexibility and freedom of movement than the previous model. It is also more expensive than the wired model.

3. Video capture device – These are basically digicams with a webcam feature. To operate this model it must be connected to a computer’s USB port. it features more capabilities than the first two models such as broadcasting live video.

Tips when buying webcams

1. With webcams and digicams, always remember that bigger is better. Choose a camera with a high resolution for a good image quality.

2. Choose a webcam that has motion detectorss so you can freely move around without having to adjust the webcam.

3. Most camera models fall within the $30 to $100 range. Choose one that fits your budget and needs.

4. Make sure your computer meets the camera’s minimum hardware and memory requirements.
