The Legend of Tiffany and Co
By Arsene Bergkamp
One can buy or order custom jewelry, but designer jewelry has carved out a niche in our culture. Tiffany and Co is one of the leaders in the field of elegant designer jewelry.
Designer jewelry has long been a part of our culture, and no company is more well-known than Tiffany and Co. Usually just called “Tiffany”, this company has been producing spectacular jewelry (and some silver and housewares) since 1845. Many people dream of owning an expensive piece of Tiffany jewelry, and the designer has inspired many reproductions and knock-offs throughout the years, which serve to fill the demand for a cheaper version of these designer jewels.
The Tiffany company first became “Tiffany and Co” when Charles Tiffany purchased the company and began running it in 1853. Throughout the years, Tiffany has been an integral part of the United States’ history, starting with its involvement in the Civil War. In 1862, Tiffany’s supplied surgical instruments, swords and other supplies to the Union Army (a far cry from their expensive jewelry line!). The company also revised the Great Seal of the United States in 1885, and created a pattern of china for First Lady Lady Bird Johnson in 1968.
Most people think of Tiffany, however, as the ultimate jewelry store. Tiffany has become famous for being at the height of jewelry fashion, and for developing jewelry like the Tiffany setting for diamonds. The movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s was shot on location at the New York City Tiffany store, and showcases the splendor of this jeweler’s items as well as store space. Tiffany’s has become so ubiquitous in the jewelry field that many people know they’re receiving Tiffany jewelry just by the color of the jewelry’s box – Tiffany Blue, a registered trademark.
Today, many people are also being introduced to Tiffany jewelry through the company’s extensive sterling silver jewelry line. An affordable alternative to the store’s platinum and gold jewelry (but still not cheap by any means), Tiffany’s silver is often worn by those who want an authentic piece of Tiffany jewelry but don’t have the money for a diamond. The silver jewelry is often the most duplicated, with many forgeries and knock-offs on the market.
To be sure you’re getting a true piece of Tiffany jewelry, there’s only one way to do it – buy from the source. Tiffany and Co has many stores in large cities throughout the world, but they also have a website and catalog for people who don’t live close to one of the stores. This catalog, known as the Blue Book, has been in continuous publication since 1845.
